EVA Hot Melts for Bookbinding

What is EVA Hot Melts For Bookbinding

EVA hot melt is a type of adhesive that is solid at room temperature but melts when heated, allowing it to bond materials together. It is widely used in various industries due to its excellent adhesive properties and versatility. EVA hotmelt can be found in products we use every day, such as packaging materials, automotive parts, footwear, and woodworking applications. EVA hotmelt is primarily composed of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate copolymers, which are derived from the polymerization of ethylene and vinyl acetate monomers. The ratio of ethylene and vinyl acetate in the copolymer can vary, resulting in different adhesive properties. Other additives such as tackifiers, antioxidants, and plasticizers may also be included to enhance specific characteristics of the adhesive.

Properties of EVA Hot Melts

Although EVA adhesives vary in properties depending on their specific formulations, in general, they adhere to the widest range of substrates, operate over one of the widest temperature ranges for hot melt adhesives and are the most affordable. EVA hot melt adhesives generally require an application or melt temperature of 176º and have a wide viscosity range. For the most part, EVA adhesives have a relatively fast set speed. However, it is important to remember that if you are using a formulation with a higher proportion of vinyl acetate the set time will be somewhat longer. EVA adhesives can operate at temperatures between -40º and 80º.

How to Use EVA Hot Melts For Bookbinding

For EVA hot-melt , there are generally two types of binding: high-speed glue and low-speed glue. High-speed glue has a slightly faster curing speed, and low-speed glue has a slightly slower curing speed. According to different materials, books are divided into offset paper and coated paper glue; and there are back glue and side glue. Different EVA hot melt glue should be chosen to meet the strength and needs of the adherend, so as to achieve a good bonding effect. To use hot melt adhesive, you must master the preparation procedures before use, such as pre-gluing, temperature, etc.

Preheating of EVA hot melt adhesive
Before using EVA hot melt adhesive, the solid glue must be preheated and melted. There are two preheating methods: one is preheating with an oil bath. That is, the jacketed melting pot is preheated; the other is preheating with an electric plate, that is, directly preheating in the preheating melting pot with an electric heating plate device. The preheating time is generally 2 hours. When the gel reaches the required heating temperature and has good fluidity, the glue is released into the working glue pot with a temperature of 160~200℃ through a constant temperature pipeline, for use in gluing binding books, etc.

Adhesion and adaptability of EVA hot melt adhesive
In the actual production process, the adhesive force of the hot melt adhesive will vary with the heating temperature of the hot melt adhesive, the difference of the adherend material, the width and depth of the milling back, the height of the glue, and the operation of the binding machine speeds, etc. This will get different bonding effects.

(1) Heating temperature of hot melt adhesive
The softening point of hot melt adhesive would generally be above 80℃. That is, when heated to 80℃, the colloid would begin to soften and melt. This temperature is only the melting temperature of the hot melt adhesive. To make it melt to the extent that it can bond books, the heating temperature has to rise to 130-180℃. At this temperature, the viscosity, fluid and viscosity of the colloid can be all suitable for the binding of books and books.

(2) The relationship between book paper and gluing temperature
The paper textures of making books are different, so the temperature of gluing should also be different. This is not only because of the different fibers of the paper, but more importantly, the different thermal conductivity of the colloid due to the type and texture of the paper, which changes the cooling rate. Take the thermal conductivity of coated paper (also known as coated paper) and relief paper (non-coated paper) as an example, the cooling rate of the glue of the former is faster than that of the latter. Because the inorganic matter contained in coated paper is about 10 times higher than that of non-coated paper such as letterpress, news, offset paper, etc., and inorganic matter has good thermal conductivity, which can make the hot melt adhesive cool down faster.

For example, when the gluing temperature is both 170℃, the tensile test value of the hot melt adhesive of non-coated paper can meet the expected requirements, while that of the coated paper cannot. Therefore, when gluing the coated paper, it is necessary to increase the temperature of the glue solution and increase its strength.

(3) The relationship between the open time of EVA hot melt adhesive and the operating speed of production equipment.
In the production of perfect binding processing, there are three time stages that must be strictly controlled when using hot melt , namely opening time, curing time and drying time for cooling and hardening. The opening time refers to the time for applying glue on the back of the book. The curing time is the time for the cover and the back of the book to be glued together. The cooling, hardening and drying time is the time for the book with the cover to be cooled and finalized after curing. Only after these three time stages can the book be finalized and achieve the desired shapes.

These several time stages of using hot melt adhesive are closely related to the operating speed of the equipment. For example, the open time of hot melt adhesive is generally 7-15 second. And this time is the time for the perfect binder to perform milling and transmission. The process of applying glue to the cover and the back of the book (excluding the jammed back of the book) must be completed within 15 seconds, so that the hot melt adhesive can be used to achieve a good bonding effect. If the equipment is running at very slow speed, and the bonding work cannot be completed within 15 seconds, the bonding effect is definitely not ideal. And there will be problems such as weak bonding, failure to stick, books falling apart after being booked, and pages falling.

In addition to the opening and curing time, the cooling, hardening and drying time are also required to be basically accurate, especially for the glue used in the production line of wireless glue binding. That's because this kind of production line is a linked assembly line from the collating machine, which collate to the book cutting, all parts of it are connected with each other. After the book is glued with cover of the bag, the time for the book to be transferred to the cutting part must conform to a certain rule, so that the book cutting can meet the ideal requirements. Cooling, hardening and drying can ensure the finished product.

This process should be completed within 3 minutes, otherwise it will cause deformation of the book back, unstable size of the finished product, sticking to the knife, etc., which will affect the quality of the finished product and cause undue losses. Therefore, the length of the book delivery conveyor (conveyor belt) of the linked production line should be selected according to different operating speeds. Generally, the length of the common conveyor belt is between 40 and 55 meters. It can also be longer or shorter according to needs, but it must be guaranteed. Books with a cover should be moved on the conveyor belt to cool for more than 3 minutes. The quality of book binding is determined by many factors such as paper, hot melt adhesive, binding materials and craftsmanship.

Basic Resin Introduction of EVA Hot Melt

The basic resin of hot melt adhesive is the copolymerization of ethylene and vinyl acetate under high temperature and pressure, that is, EVA resin. This kind of resin is the main component of making hot melt adhesive. The proportion and quality of the basic resin determine the basic performance of hot melt adhesive, (such as adhesive bonding ability, melting temperature and bonding strength). Generally, the VA content is 18-33. Melting fat (MI) 6-800, low VA content, the higher the crystallinity, the greater the hardness. Under the same circumstances, the larger the VA content, the lower the crystallinity and the higher the elasticity. The choice of EVA melting fat is also very important. The smaller the melting fat, the poorer the fluidity High strength, high melting temperature, poor wetting and permeability to the adherend. On the contrary, if the melting fat is too large, the melting temperature of the glue is low, the fluidity is better but the bonding strength is reduced.

Tackifier

Tackifier is one of the main additives of EVA hot melt adhesive. If only the basic resin has the cohesive force at a certain temperature when it is melted, when the temperature drops, it will be difficult to wet and infiltrate the paper, lose the cohesive ability, and cannot achieve the cohesive effect; adding a tackifier can improve The fluidity of the colloid and the wettability of the adherend improve the bonding performance and achieve the required bonding strength.

Viscosity modifier

Viscosity modifier is also one of the main additives of hot melt adhesives. Its function is to increase the fluidity of the colloid and adjust the solidification speed to achieve the purpose of fast bonding and firmness. Otherwise, the viscosity of the hot melt adhesive is too high, unable or difficult to flow, and it is difficult to penetrate into the signature, so it cannot be bonded firm. Adding a viscosity regulator with a low softening point can achieve the purpose of good penetration and firm adhesion during bonding.

Antioxidant

Adding an appropriate amount of antioxidant is to prevent premature aging of EVA hot melt adhesive. Because the colloid will be oxidized and decomposed when the temperature is too high when it is melted, adding an antioxidant can ensure that the bonding performance does not change under high temperature conditions.

EVA Hot Melts Glue Housekeeping

Applying hot melt glue at the right temperature, and pressure, in the right quantities, and with the right level of compression will help to deliver an effective adhesive bond. The guidelines below, offer an outline to help troubleshoot some of the most common issues found while using hot melt glue.

Hot melt tank

Applying adhesive at the right temperature prevents the hot melt from oxidising and burning, if the heat is too high, or alternatively, stringing and running poorly if the temperature is too low.

Applicator

Getting the application temperature right prevents excess adhesive from being applied, if the glue is too hot, or from experiencing poor jetting and an inconsistent adhesive application if it's too low.

Pressure

If pump pressure is too low, the flow of the adhesive will be severely restricted and, ultimately, could starve the glue nozzles. If pressure is too high, it may splash, overfire and use an excess of adhesive, not only affecting the efficiency of the process but also presenting a hazard.

Substrate materials

Substrate temperatures above 15°C (60°F) and below 35°C (95°F) generally give the best results. When a hot melt is in contact with a cold surface, its temperature rapidly falls, creating a sharper setting speed and consequent wetting difficulties that can lead to defective gluing.

Application of EVA Hot Melts

Quick assembly, recyclable cardboard box
The transportation packaging industry is a large user of EVA hot melt adhesive seam sealing. Packers and manufacturers use it to create strong bonds on box edges, envelopes, top seals, lid fillers and product-in-box containers.

Binding printed books and magazines
How are pages in modern publications held in place without traditional lock lines? Thanks to the use of EVA hotmelt for books, fully printed books can be bound quickly, inexpensively, and in a way that will stand the test of time – all without damaging the pages.

Paste product labels and covers
Sometimes, manufacturers need to put a pre-printed external label on their box or on the product itself. For some products, such as bottles and cans, it is nearly impossible to print directly on the surface. Hot melt adhesives can attach strong adhesive labels to virtually any substrate and surface shape.

Making hygienic disposable medical supplies
Bandage, tampon and medical pad manufacturers all routinely use hot melt adhesives to create safe, sterile, degradable seals. Precise hot melt connections have helped biomedical experts create seamless, metal-free absorbent disposables that remain sterile, hygienic and safe to use on human skin.

Glue non-conductive electronics inside
A serious problem with hermetic electronics is that the plastic molding and metal need to fit together without the risk of conductive bridging or parts falling apart. While screws can bridge the gap, hot melt glue can also help. Melted contact seals are used around finer circuit boards and machine cladding to create layered “layers” to save space and ensure build strength.

Lock the woodwork together
When it comes to wood products, screws and locking joints are not the only options on the market. Special grades of molten hot melt adhesives can create durable, long-lasting bonds that seal parts together or reinforce existing woodwork for greater integrity in the finished wood piece.

FAQ

Q: How long does it take for EVA hot melts to cure?

A: Some EVA hot melts have fast set times and can form strong initial bonds in as little as 15 seconds. Most EVA hot melts also require 24 hours before they are completely cured, and during this time their strength continues to increase from reactions with the moisture in the air.

Q: Is EVA hot melts strong?

A: Hot EVA hot meltsare great for so many projects. The bond formed is very strong and the glue adheres to all kinds of materials. The concept is simple: a glue stick is inserted into the glue gun and then heated until it melts. The melted glue is applied to a surface to bond materials together.

Q: Is EVA hot melts reversible?

A: EVA hot melts is generally considered irreversible. Once it cools and solidifies, it forms a strong and durable bond.

Q: Will EVA hot melts in the sun?

A: Most standard EVA hot melts have a melting point in the range of 250 to 380 degrees Fahrenheit (121 to 193 degrees Celsius). While these temperatures are much higher than what you'd experience on a typical sunny day, it's still possible for hot glue to soften or lose its bond in extremely high temperatures.

Q: What does EVA hot melts work best with?

A: Hot melts are thermoplastic (can re-melt when heated) adhesives which offer a fast cure and easy dispensing using a hot melt stick gun. They excel at bonding porous materials such as paper, cardboard, wood, as well as some plastics.

Q: What is the curing temperature of EVA hot melts?

A: The curing at ~150oC is needed to produce a 70~80% gel in EVA to enhance its mechanical strength to support the crystalline-Si solar cell strings. Many of the multiple processes for manufacturing the crystalline-Si based and thin film modules can be automated except the vacuum encapsulation stage.

Q: What is EVA hot melts made of?
