Conducting destructive testing on hot melt glue sticks is an effective method for evaluating their durability and performance limits. Here are some commonly used destructive testing methods:
1. Tensile Strength Test
The aim is to determine the maximum force the adhesive bond can withstand vertically before failing.
Procedure:
Apply hot melt glue between two substrates, such as wood, plastic, or metal.
Use a tensile testing machine to gradually increase the vertical load, measuring the force until the bond breaks.
Record the maximum load and observe the failure mode (adhesive fracture or cohesive fracture).
2. Shear Strength Test
This measures the glue layer's ability to withstand shear forces.
Procedure:
Apply the adhesive in an overlapping fashion between two pieces of material.
Use shear testing equipment to apply force perpendicular to the bond, measuring when the bond fails.
